Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a wonderful group of students in a high poverty neighborhood. The children I teach have the same drive to learn as students in more affluent neighborhoods.

I have been teaching in this same neighborhood for twelve years and for the past ten years, I have seen parents struggle to buy basic supplies for their children.

They often have to choose whether to buy school supplies or food. Needless to say, the parents chose to buy food. A lack of supplies can really hurt a student's self-esteem, which then affects their learning.

My Project

A major 4th grade science concept is simple and compound machines. Sometimes students can have a hard time understanding how simple and compound machines work.

The ideal way for students to grasp simple and compound machines is through hands on explorations. These Lego sets are perfect for this.

Students can work in pairs or small groups to build and explore various types of simple and compound machines. With these Lego sets, will allow students to not only identify simple and compound machines and they will enable them to explain the purpose of the machines and how the machines work to make jobs easier.
