Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a Title I public charter school in Florida that serves mostly Hispanic children from poor immigrant families. We are right down the street from a huge Tropicana plant, and most days the smell of oranges permeates the campus. Many parents of our students work in the plant and in similar jobs in the area.

My students in the Class of 2021 will be the first graduating class in our school, and the first to graduate high school in most families.

Most are English Language Learners who need extra support to master academic English as they work hard to pass the required Florida graduation exams and prepare for college and jobs.

My English core class and writing and journalism electives focus on strengthening students' language and content skills, as well as building much needed background knowledge. This year we are preparing for the all-important ELA graduation exam, and getting ready for the SAT. My students will also be taking AP English courses in junior and senior years, so we will be working hard!

My Project

Our Title I public charter school is growing its high school! My students will be the first tenth graders and they are so excited! However, they do face a number of challenges: many are English language learners whose native language is Spanish; most are children of immigrant families whose parents have limited formal education; all are economically disadvantaged and qualify for the free lunch program (in fact, some even receive food to take home on Fridays, thanks to a partner organization). That's why it is important that in setting up our English 10 classroom, we have plenty of supplies and materials that help students fully engage with the texts they read.

By providing us with lots of paper, markers, post-it notes, index cards, glue, and even pens, you will be giving the students the opportunity to create posters, highlight main ideas, write exit tickets, create post-it timelines, illustrate their own books with manila folder covers, collaborate on storyboards, and get plenty of reading, writing, and even speaking practice!

Strong English language and communication skills are key as these students face Florida's 10th grade ELA exam (necessary for graduation), and then go on to tackle the SAT as well as Advanced Placement courses in English. They are pioneers in our school and also in their families, as they aim to pursue higher education. With these simple tools--paper, markers, post-its, index cards, glue--we can actually deepen students' engagement with words, literature, and nonfiction works. It's active, text-based, and student-centered!
