This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Did you ever see an amazing chemistry demonstration that just had to be seen to be appreciated? There are a number of remarkable demos and labs that require silver nitrate to perform.

We are a rural school district in Central Washington.

All three schools are on a single campus, with about four hundred students at the high school. A lot of the students' parents are field laborers with limited proficiency in English. Approximately 80% of our students are Mexican. The vast majority of the students appreciate the value of a good education and work to take advantage of what is being offered to them.

My Project

There are a number of of interesting chemistry experiments that require silver nitrate. Yes, I could show the students videos, but that pales in comparison to actually doing it. This project will allow students to do some of the most impressive looking single replacement reactions chemistry can offer, as well as perform some practical applications of reduction-oxidation chemistry, such as electroless plating.

Chemistry is a lab science and needs to be experienced in the lab and not simply read about in a book.

This project will help my students appreciate the beauty of chemistry in ways that are not possible without this material. Although this chemical is expensive, the relevant experiments don't require a large amount, so I expect this bottle to last five years or more, thus allowing the impact from this donation to reach several hundreds of students over a long time range.
