My Students

My students attend a suburban school right outside of Columbia, SC. We have a very diverse population. These students represent all different races, genders, and income populations. As a member of this community, I live among them, and am so proud to be a member of this community.

Theatre is an inclusive fine arts that welcomes all students.

I teach a class of sixth grade, two classes of mixed seventh and eighth grade, and a modified class specifically for special needs students. Did I mention that our school hasn't had a theatre classroom in several years? Allowing students to have a freedom of expression with their bodies and voices will strengthen their independence and creative skills both in and out of the classroom.

My students are kind, creative, passionate, and dramatic. I am so excited to bring the immersive experience of theatre class to these students. Many of them are already "all in," and it's so exciting to watch!

My Project

The books that I have selected are simple texts that are easily adaptable for middle school students. These simple texts have easily identifiable emotions for students, and are high interest. We will use these texts in multiple formats, when we study character development, when we study scripting and blocking, and when we study set design. The simple stories are easily accessible for all levels of middle school students, and are familiar to many of them. Therefore, they are a natural choice for me to present to these novice thespians as they create their first works of performing arts. It is my hope that my students will create works that would make these authors proud!
