My Students

"There's no limit to how much you'll know, depending how far beyond zebra you go." -Dr. Seuss. In our PreK for students with autism, the curriculum extends beyond simply teaching the ABC's and 123's. Our youngsters need support in identifying and responding to their own, as well as, others' emotions.

Our class is a Pre-K for students between the ages of 3-5 with special needs.

Their disabilities differ, but most are placed on the autism spectrum. We are located on an elementary school campus and are the only Pre-K in the district. My students have their days planned full of interventions, assessments, and therapy sessions. They are all such little troopers that face great difficulties daily. When they come to school, I want them to be excited and happy. School should be challenging, but there's no reason it can't also be fun! Despite their disabilities, the students in my classroom are just like any other preschoolers. They love coming to school and exploring their environment in hands-on ways. We love music, dancing, and art (especially the messy kind!), but our favorite time of the day is story time! If you were to visit our classroom, you would probably be introduced to our favorite book, "Pete the Cat," within the first five minutes of your arrival, and possibly even sooner!

My Project

I have requested materials that will help to foster the development of my students' emotional intelligence. The emotion cards will allow them to see real faces exhibiting authentic expressions. This will help them to label facial expressions and their emotional counterparts. I have also requested baby dolls which will help interact in a loving and gentle way. The dolls will allow them to take on the roll of a caregiver and better understand how to soothe or comfort someone in distress. I also requested two games about emotions which foster group learning and interaction. The students will be given the opportunity to collaboratively identify and understand the emotions. The games will help the students to problem solve and model appropriate emotions and reactions.

Emotional intelligence is a very important part of being a member of society.

People need to be able to not only identify and cope with the way they feel, but they also must be able to properly respond to the emotions of others. Your donation will help my students develop a stronger knowledge of emotions, which will enable them to better relate to the world around them.
