My Students

Each time we start a new activity, I tell my students to "Show me ready!' The children in my classroom ARE ready to learn. They are an eager bunch of young learners.

We don't always have all of the supplies we need, but our enthusiasm makes up for it.

My children are mostly first generation Americans, with very little educational support from home. We try to make every hour of the school day count. My students are eager to learn and to try new things. They are encouraged to be risk takers.

Our school encourages a sense of community. The children often work in small groups. They are encouraged to help each other in and out of the classroom.

My Project

Every child in our school is asked to sign their names on homework contracts, Anti-Bullying petitions, and "Rock Star Walls." None of the children know how to actually sign their names, as they only know how to print.

We are asking for Cursive Workbooks.

The Cursive writing practice helps students master legible writing and will help them to sign their names in the cursive style. Most students are not taught to write in cursive. For those that have difficulty writing in print, or handwriting that is difficult to read, cursive is a solution. When writing in cursive, the writer's hand does not need to leave the page when writing a word. This fluid motion helps the children to write with ease.

When I asked the children if they would be interested in learning to write in cursive, they were beyond enthusiastic. This will be the first class in many years that will have this opportunity.
