Help Ms. Boyce

Hello, I teach a self-contained emotionally disabled classroom. The children are in kindergarten through third grade. The children in my room are working on different academic levels. We teach in small group settings and group them according to their academic level. The different academic levels mean I need materials and teaching tools at a variety of academic levels. I have children in my classroom who have learning disabilities that go hand in hand with their emotional and behavior disabilities. Some of the children in my classroom are working two to three grade levels behind their peers. Most of the children who are staffed into my special education class struggle with reading. I believe it is so important to teach children the basic sight words in order for them to become strong readers. It has been my experience with some of the older special education children that the sight words are the most difficult for them to grasp the older they get. Two years ago I taught the third, fourth and fifth grade emotionally disabled class. It was disheartening to watch the children struggle to read. They were embarrassed when they were not able to read the most basic of sight words. My goal is to do everything I can to teach and help the younger children I teach master their sight words. I have found a variety of materials that teach and reinforce sight words. I know each of the pieces that I am requesting will help me create a solid sight word program for my children. The first item I am requesting is sight-word magnets. I will use these with the children in a whole group setting on the white board to introduce sight words, create sentences etc. The children will also be able to use these magnets on individual white boards during center time. The second item to the program is sight-word tactile cards. The sight word cards have textured letters on them. Research has prove that tactile learning is a great way to help children retain material because they are using more senses while they are learning. I am also asking for the sight-word learning centers and storage rack to hold them. These are centers that allow the children the opportunity to practice with the sight words we have been studying all week. Finally I am asking for the Lakeshore sight-word readers level 1 and level 2. This is the last stage of the sight word program. The children begin reading books that include the sight words they have learned. I really believe that each one of the items I am asking for will help provide a strong sight-word program for the children in my class.
