This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember how you first learned to read? As adults, we sometimes forget everything that goes into the complex process of learning to read. My students, though, are experiencing the excitement right now!

I teach first grade in a high-poverty area.

My students are bright and inquisitive, but often lack the resources and support outside of school that they need in order to thrive. Many of them struggle with phonics and sight words--words that they can't sound out phonetically, like 'said' and 'the'. These words show up in even the most basic books, so we are working very hard to learn them!

My Project

With sight word and rhyming word listening centers, my students will be able to learn new words with guidance even when I need to work with another group. With sentence building activities, students will be able to practice writing the sight words as well. Each student will enjoy having a personal set of sight word cards to practice reading and writing at home and in school with a partner. Private partitions will also help my students stay focused when working independently.

Your donation will help my struggling students learn to read, and enjoy the process of it, too!

My students will be able to read both for pleasure and understanding, without having to stop at every other word to figure it out. Their writing skills will also improve as they learn to spell sight words correctly. With your support, my students will have more fun learning to read!
