Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are so inquisitive and eager to learn! When they come into the library every week, they are engaged in literature, research, and activities that strengthen their love of reading. Our school library is such a special place because for some students, it's the first time they are taught that reading is fun!

I do not run a "quiet" library.

My students love having the chance to work together to discuss stories, ask questions, explore new topics, practice reading strategies, and chat with their classmates about things they find interesting. My students know the library belongs to all of us, and I want them to have the best resources they can to explore the world beyond our walls!

My Project

My younger students are so eager to read, but many of them need specific focus on sight word recognition before they can apply it in real text. They get direct instruction in their classrooms, but I want the library to be a fun way to practice their needed skills. That's where sight word centers come in.

Practicing skills by playing games means that learning is engaging and fun!

Using hands-on games (like fishing for sight words) and visual activities (like sight word sentence building with pictures) keeps students interested. Having some centers focused on letters means I can meet all students' needs, even the ones who aren't ready for sight words.
