Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Being a dual language classroom has a lot of benefits for the growth of a child. Not only does it promote learning two different languages, but it also nurtures a feeling of community and belonging. I want to help my students emerge in Spanish by providing more rigorous books in the target language. My goal is to help give access to the Spanish language while simultaneously promoting the rich Latin American culture. This would allow my students to better understand each other and the world around them. My students are eager to learn and want to engage with more Spanish texts. However, allowing space in another language can be challenging especially when most resources are in English. For this reason, I want to provide my students with more books in Spanish to help promote Latin American culture as well as help them further push their comprehension in Spanish. By providing students with Spanish books and authentic Latin American authors, I will also help them better understand themselves and the world. It will help them expand their vocabulary which will then help them expand their comprehension in English as well. Also, we do a lot of research in both languages and having access to Spanish texts helps them deepen their research skills as well as gives them access to the information. Having nonfiction text in Spanish helps them gain new vocabulary that they might not have previously known. More importantly, this would allow them to read independently and gain a love for reading in different languages. Finally, my students have shown a will to learn and read in Spanish when they asked me if we could expand our Spanish classroom library.
