This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students process their thinking in a variety of different ways. Some students draw out their thinking on whiteboards, others talk it out, some sit and think about the lesson and go over the work internally while others might write about it. In our math class, we allow students time to work independently but also provide structured collaboration time so that students can process their thinking together.

By working together, students solidify their understanding of math and develop their oral language skills.

This oral language practice is essential because a significant portion of our student population are current English Learners or are reclassified as fluent English proficient. By working together, students practice justifying their thinking, respectfully agreeing or disagreeing with evidence, or even explaining their steps to how they solved a problem. Students also practice active listening with their partners and group so that they can respond to the mathematical discussion.

The supplies in this project will be used throughout the collaboration projects. The tape, paint, and foam brushes will be used by students to construct posters or to hang posters that show their thoughts from the discussions or their current thinking. The whiteboard markers are used throughout all of the classes, multiple times a day, as students work independently, with partners, and on group whiteboards. The whiteboard markers allow students to collaborate on large whiteboards, share and modify their thinking, and apply feedback from their peers in a timely manner.
