My Students

Do you remember sitting in a classroom and listening to a teacher drone on and on while writing on a whiteboard/chalkboard? I do, & I couldn't wait for class to be over. Help me create lessons that are interactive so I can excite my students and make them want to come to class, not escape from it.

I teach Special Education Junior English and World History at a rural high school in Arizona.

My students have all been diagnosed with a disability that negatively impacts their learning. Like everywhere in the country, money is tight and there just isn't funding for everything that is available to help our students. Most students become bored with traditional lecture and worksheet lessons, and my special education students, exponentially so. There is only so much I can do with my own shoestring budget, and technology unfortunately is something that I just can't provide for my students, despite the fact that it is arguably the most important tool a teacher can utilize.

My Project

With an Elmo in my classroom, I'll be able to project any piece of paper up onto a projector screen. This will target my many visual learners and low vision students, because it will make assignment directions more clear, as they'll be able to see exactly what I'm doing. I will also be able to have students put their own work up on the Elmo so that they can clearly see what I'm teaching when we go over peer editing and writing.

During my coursework in college, every lesson plan we created utilized an ELMO and an LCD projector.

I was dumbfounded when I began teaching that these are not pieces of technology readily available to teachers. A document camera helps students see what's expected and what their finished product should look like. It's an amazing piece of technology that can be so powerful in a classroom. Please help my class to become the best that it can be.
