I am a Dance and Arts Teacher at on of the best schools in East New York, Brooklyn. What makes this school so great are the amazing children that attend P.S./ I.S 202. I taught in 202 for 8 years as a Special Education Teacher and witnessed first hand how important dance and arts were to all the children in their social and academic success. The area in which the school is located is a low income area with little hope, so I took a chance and I pitched a program to my principal that focused on a dance and arts class that will give students the opportunity to empress and display their natural talent. This is the second year the program is in my school so a lot depends on the success of the shows and productions the students will produce. She gave the children and myself an opportunity to produce and organize performances in front of the entire school and their parents. If you can only witness the joy and happiness in each student's face when he or she comes to dance class. The determination is written on each student's face that is involved to produce a great show and be part of something wonderful that they never experience before. We are working on our Spring Show that is coming out great, but we now realize that the school budget does not have funds to help with the scenery and background for our performance. We are dealing with the disappointment of the students and also the feeling of hopelessness that runs rampant in this community. I already spoke to the students about obstacles in life so regardless we will produce a great show. The show must go on! This is why I am writing to DonorsChoose in hopes someone will help make our next show as beautiful as the students performing in the show. The decorations and background only adds to the hard work the students display in their dancing and acting. I am requesting costumes and materials to create the scenery for our Spring Show to be performed in April. Headbands, hats, shirts, background paper. Thank you so much for helping those that are involved in this program because this one event along with the future shows could make a BIG difference in many kids lives.
