Show Them A Mirror, Then A Window: Reading Is Transformative

My students need more book title choices for both homework reading and literature circles. Wide reading with supplemental core literature is crucial for their literacy growth.

My Students

In today's digital era, reading a book is becoming something of a challenge for all students. They are used to fast paced action, video games and You Tube clips. Working through a longer novel can be painstaking if the book choice is not in some way enticing to the students.

Our high school is a large, urban school.

We are just blocks away from a large industrial factory area. Most of the students are Latinos, and many have parents working very hard just to survive in today's economy. I teach 11th and 12th graders who are on the verge of graduating (hopefully) and being thrown into an adult world. All teachers in our small school, HPIAM, work very hard to encourage college and assist in any way possible to assist them with that goal. Most students are several years behind in their independent reading levels, and increasing the amount of time they spend reading is crucial to any goal they set for themselves, but especially preparing for college.

My Project

These books will be used for both homework reading and literature circles. For homework reading I check a book out to every student of mine, and work hard to match books to readers. For literature circles, students are grouped by their reading level as they work together to read and analyze a novel. Both of these reading activities are vital to their literacy development. The whole group reading we are mandated to do is not always interesting to the students and is not always at their reading level (reading at your reading level is really the only way to improve your lexile level).

I love reading, and I want to foster a life long love of literature in my students.

School provided anthologies alone will not help foster this love. We need core literature, strong novels that engage the readers and make them ask questions about the world.
