My Students

In describing my twenty-two fourth grade students, the first thing I would say is,"Wow! They are great kids!" It is, in my perspective, "great" that regardless of the outside circumstance that they experience, they come to my class open and hopeful. Often hungry, sometimes unkempt, and other times a little angry, I think it is "great" that they show up and bring what emotion they have for the day and attempt to be part of our class.

We are a diverse group in many ways, ethnic background, family composition, living arrangements.

In other ways we are very much the same. We each have a hope to be cared for, to be recognized, to be appreciated. We each struggle with the doubts that our dynamic world can rain down upon us with unrelenting frequency. What is "great" is the fact that by October we have become a "class". We share our doubts, trusting in our class . We celebrate our triumphs together. both individual and group wins. We share and care for each other as we embark on our years learning journey.

My Project

Our Social Studies curriculum includes a unit on regions of the United States. These pull down maps will allow students to study specific regions while seeing and learning about the whole country. These maps will be the anchor charts for our Social Studies lessons. In the past, I have mounted maps high up on the walls near the ceiling, well above the students' eye level. Your generous donation will allow me to mount the maps at the chalk board/white board level. So students will be able to touch the maps as they make sense about the geography of our country and the world.

This past spring, my students were debating whether or not Florida was part of "the south." Unfortunately, I had already taken down my maps from high up on the wall, because of end of year testing protocols.

The students could have had a richer debate if I had been able to pull down a map of the United States. This question, posed by my students, challenged me to think more deeply about physical regions versus cultural regions of our country. Next year, with your help, my new group o students will also be able to consider open ended questions such as this.
