My Students

Visual representation of ideas helps us all to make sense of our world. This is especially true for 3 and 4 year olds. Think about a STOP sign. Chances are you knew what it meant long before you could read the letters S-T-O-P. Visuals helped you connect the red octagon with the idea of stopping.

My students are the coolest kids around.

They are 3 and 4 year olds who amaze me every day. Our class is blended, meaning that half of our students have some sort of special learning needs. But we work hard to drive home the idea that we are all learning, sometimes we're just learning different things at different times. Our class is really in to learning how to spell and write our names right now. We love reading "Pete The Cat". We have learned about the letters A, S, M & O so far this year. And we can tell you that mustache starts with M and oatmeal starts with O without any hesitation. We love to do obstacle courses. We really enjoy reading with our second grade reading buddies on Fridays.

My Project

These materials will allow us to create visual supports for our students and meet their needs in an individual way throughout the school year. We will be able to put materials in to the hands of students who need to see the items in a story up close while we read a book as a class. We will be able to create materials that allow our students to practice sequencing with a concrete object, rather than just trying to explain our ideas verbally. And we will be able to connect ideas to their visual representations in a way that will help our students to learn ideas and lessons that will last a life time. Much in the same way that we can still remember that red octagon means "STOP" decades after we first made the connection.

These materials will help us to create materials that help the world make sense to our students.

We will be able to individualize instruction and support our students in the ways that they, as individual little learners, need to be supported.
