I teach third grade in an elementary school in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Our school is a title one school, where all of our children get free lunch and most of them come from low income families that don't speak English. Therefore, it is difficult for them to help their children with what they are learning in school. This year the children will be working hard on their math strategies because in March they will be taking their math citywide tests. The hardest thing the children struggle with is money. They need as much hands-on experience as possible. These math manipulatives will reinforce making sums of money by using coins to identify coin values, adding and subtracting money, and most of all build up their confidence.
