My Students

My students are from a high-poverty area of Arkansas in the Mississippi Delta. It is important that students who grow up in lower-income families learn money management skills in order to take advantage of opportunities as they grow older.

When teaching about money management, students often don't pay close attention because it seems the topic doesn't apply to them.

They would rather spend the money they have available and things like savings and investments and the like are for "old people."

While covering this topic, I feel that it's important that students are offered materials that speak on their level and to their needs and wants. And of course, learning is always better when it's fun!

My Project

I teach life skills in all my Family and Consumer Sciences classes, and some of the most valuable life skills I can teach are how to manage future income.

It is important for students to learn the basics of budgeting and savings, insurance, and how to purchase a car or a home.

When students are taught these topics, it would be invaluable to have books and games available to reinforce the material. If my classroom library includes timely, well-written books that are written on a teen's level, my students would have the opportunity to pick the topics that interest them most, or those that they need the most help understanding.

As a daily closure in my classes, I read aloud to students. This encourages listening skills and encourages students to read independently. I like to read books and articles to my students that relate to the topic we are studying at the time. The books I have chosen for this project, including The Money Savvy Student; Why Didn't They Teach Me This in School; and Adulting: How to Become a Grown-up in 468 Easy(ish) Steps, will be easy to read aloud in small sections and interesting enough that students will want to read more. I am asking for multiple copies of the books so that students who want to read more right away may check out a copy. I have a small classroom library and these books will strengthen its variety and give students relevant topics to read about.

The two games I have asked for in this project relate to money management as well. If you have ever played The Game of Life or Monopoly, you know the pain of having to pay rent. Students get an idea of everyday life expenses and budgeting while having fun.
