My Project

Place value disks make a significant difference in students' learning by providing a visual, hands-on method for understanding abstract concepts, promoting active engagement, and building a strong foundation for more advanced math skills.

Place value is an abstract concept, and students often struggle to grasp the significance of each digit in a number.

Place value disks provide a tangible way to visualize how numbers are built from ones, tens, hundreds, etc. By physically manipulating the disks, students can see and touch the concepts they are learning, making the idea of place value more concrete.

When performing operations like addition or subtraction, students often struggle with regrouping (carrying or borrowing). Place value disks allow students to physically move and exchange disks, making the concept of regrouping more intuitive.

The more students practice with place value disks, the more they internalize the concept of place value. This strong foundation helps with mental math because students develop a better understanding of how numbers work. They can begin to visualize the process of adding or subtracting in their minds without needing to rely on their fingers or calculators.
