My students need a visual way to select books. Clear boxes will help them find their favorite books and the colorful bookmarks will safely save their spots when reading.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are the English Language Learner magnet school for our district. Our school has approximately a 65% ELL population. Many of our students have just left their home country and are coming to the US for the first time. Also, our school is a Title 1 school where over 90% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch due to the families low socioeconomic status.
The students we teach need a lot of assistance with becoming fluent readers.
As the school librarian, I play a key role in fostering this in every student in my school and to support my colleagues in the same endeavor. I strive to close the achievement gap and develop a love of reading in each and every one of our students. Our students interact in class, are inquisitive, and want to learn. I want this to start from Kindergarten and grow and develop all throughout their elementary career. Getting good books in their hands will do this.
My Project
The clear display boxes will allow for face-out shelving in our library collection. Each box will contain one series of books in the Leveled Reader section. Children are very visual and the boxes will help them make good book choices. Even the youngest student will be able to find a good beginning reader book!
The clear displays will also support our English Language Learners in selecting just right books.
Students often select the books that are on the display stands. The boxes will allow for whole collections to be on display while in the library shelving, not just on display on top of the shelves.
The colorful bookmarks will promote proper book handling. They will also encourage reading since students can self select the bookmark of their choice.
