Short On Books For An Inner City AP Class

My project needs 12 copies of Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, five copies of Marquez's Love in the Time of Cholera, and five copies of Orwell's 1984 to complement what I already have for a very full senior AP Lit program.

I teach Advanced Placement Literature to at-risk high school seniors in South Central Los Angeles. My students have chosen to challenge themselves with an AP class, and I do my best to make them work harder and learn more than they imagined they would or could. All of my students go on to college -- almost all go directly to 4-year universities, including UCLA, USC, Berkeley, and Stanford. Most are the first in their family to attend college.

Because our school is small, we have a limited supply of text books. I've been fortunate to have been around for more than 15 years and over the years have been able to order the novels and plays I feel passionately about and convey that passion to my students who are uniformly successful in English when they get to college. This year, something incredible happened to my AP lit class.

60% of the senior class signed up for AP! Students, many of whom have always chosen the path of least resistance, are choosing the path of greatest resistance: me.... That's great for them -- and me -- but I don't have enough books for all of them. In theory, my principal will order additional books. In reality -- in a big clumsy inner-city school district -- the books won't arrive until the end of the year.

The Grapes of Wrath, 1984, and Love in the Time of Cholera are transformative works. They are novels that have, over the years, engaged my students, challenged their assumptions about the human condition, opened their minds, and helped them to better understand their own lives. I look forward to sharing these works with my students -- all of them. Your generous assistance can make that possible.
