This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Fifth grade is a pivotal year for elementary students. It is an age where my students are old enough to face reality but young enough to be impressionable. This is the year students grow and develop as well as decide what kind of students they want to become. My fifth grade class is excited to learn; even in this distance learning world, they are ready to take on their academics and learn true responsibility and empathy for the world around them.
My students are engaged readers who enjoy reading about the real world through the use of graphic novels.
I'm enthusiastic about continuing to keep them engaged in creative ways, through literature.
My Project
Students will engage in empathy and understanding of diversity, through the use of a novel study of a graphic novel. The graphic novel, When Stars are Scattered, focuses on two brothers that are in the midst of a war zone and forced to live on a refugee camp in Kenya, not knowing whether their mom is alive. The story encourages the importance of family, empathy, and allows students to open their eyes to real world situations. Shining the light on diversity will allow students to enter a different world other than their own.
