My Students

My classroom is full of curious readers, authors, scientists, and mathematicians. My students attend a Title I school in Oakland, California with a school-wide free breakfast and lunch program. Many of my students come from families and communities that have experienced some form of trauma and often have difficulty coming to school. The typical student in my classroom has felt the stress and uncertainty of homelessness, hunger, loss and so much more. My students are survivors and thinkers, who push through these tribulations to question, dream, and inspire. Together, we show up and work hard each and every day to grow as life-long learners and critical thinkers.

My Project

One key element of Trauma-Informed Teaching is the idea that students who come from trauma, rely on school to be a safe, stable, and welcoming environment where they can be successful. Within my classroom, I have students who are affected by trauma, hardships, and setbacks, and who vary from 2 years below grade level to 2 years above. Making classroom activities and curriculum accessible to all learners is what this project is about. Loud noises and talkative classrooms can be integral to engaging lessons, but can also be a trigger for students affected by trauma. Being able to provide noise-reducing headphones for students that need them, will allow me to serve the variety of learners that I have in my room.

This project seeks to create a more equitable classroom, where each student will have the opportunity to self-regulate their stimulation and become more independent learners.

Students will use these headphones throughout the entire school day and will be able to independently monitor when they need to wear them. These headphones will help them find academic success by keeping them focused and on task. Independent reading time, assessments, and independent work time are just a few of the parts of the day where students will benefit from this project.
