Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a large urban public high school in South Florida. Our kids are mostly from Hispanic families; most are lower middle class, but we have many low-income students as well. Culturally, they are curious and resilient, and not shy about trying new things.

The pandemic brought us many changes and challenges; among these is the spacing in classrooms.

To maintain social distancing, my desk was removed (I now have a tiny workstation) and our filing cabinets were also removed to make space. Students used laptops, tablets, and sometimes even their cell phones to complete assignments. This posed its own set of challenges because not all of them have the same access to technology. Therefore, our school district purchased consumable workbooks for each student. The problem? These workbooks are very heavy and I have no place to put them!

My Project

These materials will help us to maximize the space in our classroom while protecting the workbooks that students will use throughout the academic year. We have made changes to our classroom to allow for social distancing, and in the process last year we lost 4 filing cabinets that cannot be replaced - but we can put in shelves instead!

The shelves would fit right along the wall and are not too deep, so they will not disturb the first row of seats in the classroom.

They are not too tall (to avoid the risk of toppling over) and just right to hold the 200+ workbooks and student binders that we use every day.
