Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are extremely resilient children who come from homes with families that really want them to succeed and do well at school. The majority of my students come from homes where English is not their first language and whose incomes present greater challenges. This pandemic has really surfaced even more inequities.

My Project

My first grade, small group students, eagerly enter my room ready to start our intervention reading lessons. We use a variety of materials for our lessons such as leveled books, whiteboards, markers, manipulatives, and writing notebooks. Unfortunately, I do not have a designated area that can hold all of their things in one place. I typically have to gather all of their things in between reading groups, but I would love to teach them to help themselves and to share in the partnership of learning and working together.

I am requesting a bookshelf that will hold their materials in one place so that my students can independently gather their things without my assistance.

This allows me to spend more time being ready for them and our lesson and it also empowers them to feel like they are independent participants in our lessons.
