My Students

I have sixteen amazing, curious and hard working students in my first grade class. I teach in a small rural community that is very low income and full of diversity.

My students love to learn through experimenting with hands on projects.

I incorporate art, music, science, and technology into as much of our daily lessons as possible. Group projects and working together has really helped my students grow. They take ownership of their learning when given the opportunity to use manipulatives while learning. My students always help one another and build one other up. One thing that makes my class special is the ability THEY have to make teaching fun. My students are always upbeat and positive and ready to take on the day! Our favorite projects have been painting, building gingerbread houses, crystalized candy canes, and learning about hundreds using marshmallows, pretzels and graham crackers. I love to bring in as much hands on opportunities as possible for our everyday learning. I know some of my students do not get these opportunities at home. Using art and science is an extraordinary way for me to help my students to express themselves and allow them to explore while learning.

My Project

To make upcoming math units more engaging, my students would love a lighted math table. Learning with a math table is a fun way to simplify harder math tasks. Having it illuminated brings math to life. My students will be able to notice subtle details that are presented on the lighted surface which they otherwise would have not been able to see.

In first grade they are learning so much more than the basic mathematical functions.

We have been learning addition, subtraction, numbers and number sense, measurement, patterns, shapes, money, telling time, classifying, estimating and learning about cause and effect. Manipulatives and mathematics go hand in hand, having this lighted table will make these normal manipulatives stand out. Bring them to life and help my students REALLY see them. Three dimensional shapes will become larger, money will shine, even regular paper will become something new. Mathematics can be a challenging area for some students and I want to see all my students be successful in everything they do.

The opportunities are endless for me and my students with the use of this tool. This lighted table helps students with their physical vision, as well as hand eye coordination. Literacy, Science, Music and Art are other important areas I would be able to incorporate the light table and bring all their education to life!
