Located in Times Square, in the heart of the theater district, ours is a small public high school where every student is a theater major!
All of our students take classes in acting, dance, voice, theatrical design, playwriting and theater history.
We serve a diverse population of predominantly African American and Hispanic kids from all over New York City. They come from a wide range of backgrounds, with over 80% of our students qualifying for free school lunch. The kids are motivated and talented, but many of their families lack the resources to provide them with the materials they need to support their education. They are hands-on and on-their-feet learners who benefit from actively engaging with a text in performance, so we are reaching out for materials that will help to support our Fall Production.
My Project
Our Fall Production this year is "She Kills Monsters", a Dungeons and Dragons themed exploration of sisterhood, geek culture and LGBTQ identity.
"She Kills Monsters", takes place partly in 1990's suburban Ohio, and partly in the fantasy world of Dungeons and Dragons.
To create the magical characters and monsters that populate that world, our Theatre Tech students have created make-up designs for each character. Farrah the Fairy, Orcus the Lord of the Underworld, Lilith Morningstar and an army of goblins all need makeup to bring their characters to life. We are requesting funding to pay for the theatrical makeup our students need to support 3 tech / dress rehearsals and 5 performances.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
