Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I moved to New York City last year from Toronto, Ontario to help make a difference in the NYC school system, and what a year it has been! I am currently going into my second year of teaching science at my school which is located in the South Bronx of New York City. The general population of my school is low economically and 97% of our school's population receives free lunches on a daily basis. We are terribly under-funded and lack the funds to purchase everything that our students need. I teach approximately 250 students each week in the field of science and I supply them with everything from pencils to lab equipment. I see grades 3-5, however I also implement state-wide tests for the fourth grade. I am eagerly trying to create a curriculum that allows students to experience what it is like to be in a science lab and introduce them to the tools and technology that scientists use. However, microscopes and other basic lab materials are quite costly. Lessons using such tools are minimal and often materials can not be purchased due to lacking funds in the school budget. As of next year, grades 3, 4, and 5 will be participating in state-wide tests and I wish nothing but success for my students. However, the students are very tactile and need more then rote notes and memorization to achieve the goal of successfully passing. I have chosen one major piece of equipment per unit, per grade from the NYC scope and sequence. I hope to reinforce my teaching using these tools to aid in students learning and understanding of the concepts covered in my class. I am trying to create a real lab, as opposed to just an extension of their homeroom classroom. I need resources such as posters, models, and books pertaining to the solar system, human body, simple machines and ecosystems. I have gone to multiple professional developments to obtain free kits, however it is not enough for all all aspects of the scope and sequence. I desperately want my students to love science, be eager to learn new terms and explore. I want to provide them with the best opportunity to understand the physical world that we live in such as the solar systems and natural hazards. I appreciate anything that is donated.
