My Students

My students are a determined group who always look to help others. I have frequently caught them in class giving up their pencils or erasers to share with a peer who is without one. Majority of my students do come from a low-income household with multiple siblings. I have talked to parents about school supplies and unfortunately, they cannot keep replacing them at the speed students go through them. As a result, I had been purchasing the materials for them.

I saw the excitement in their eyes when I provided them with options of journals or pencils because they didn't have the opportunity before.

The students were extremely grateful for simply letting them borrow a pencil.

I know my students are kindhearted and profoundly respectful that they take care of the materials I gave them. In fact, I saw them use the pencils until they were just 3 inches in length.

Most of my students would be first or second generation students to graduate. They are setting the trend to work hard in order to be successful.

My Project

All of my students want to participate in team activities. Sometimes the activities require markers or pencils, and the students don't have the materials to participate. If our class had sufficient supplies, they would be able to do more drawings, posters, writing. Some of my students have to wait a long time for the marker to be passed around in order for them to participate. Due to a short supply of materials they have to wait a long time to participate, which shortens their time engaging in the activity and has them miss out on the shared learning experience.

Additionally, time spent looking for a pencil, or waiting on a marker, makes the class lose instructional time, which could be used on a fun activity.

My 9th graders have asked me to incorporate more artistic activities that include drawing, writing and poster projects. I would love to give them the opportunity to be creative if I had sufficient supplies.
