My students need reliable pencil sharpeners in order to sharpen quickly and maximize work time in the classroom, and sheet protectors to use during math.
Our 4th grade classroom is composed of a diverse group of students with a variety of learning needs. I have the opportunity to teach math and language arts to my students, and science to all of the 4th graders at the school. Reading is a primary focus at our school and these students are eager to participate in our whole school reading challenge. Our reading program tracks the total number of words each student has read during the school year and those that read 1 million words or more earn an award. I have a number of students who are striving to become word millionaires.
My Project
One of the phenomenons in a classroom is where all of the pencils disappear to. One of the struggles after replacing the pencils is having a sharpener that is heavy-duty and effective enough to sharpen hundreds of pencils per week. This basic tool is essential to a well functioning room and the better the sharpener, the less distractions a dull pencil will cause. While simple, it is a very handy tool to any teacher at any grade level.

I often create my own white boards or learning tools by placing a piece of card stock in sheet protectors for the students to complete math problems on. These sheet protectors are also used to house my lesson plans each week for easy access.
