My Students

A typical day in my classroom is filled with bright colors and lots of smiles! Students are engaged by creating meaningful artwork with a strong focus on literacy integration. We connect our artwork to stories, poetry, and are inspired by artists and their masterpieces.

My students are vibrant, brilliant- individuals who do not have the necessary tools to share themselves with the world.

They grow up in an impoverished section of Charlotte and face unimaginable daily obstacles. Most are on the free and reduced lunch program and asking them to come to art class with basic supplies puts a huge burden on their family.

My Project

The Sharpies will have a multitude of uses in the art classroom! They will be used by the entire school. Currently I do not have enough for every table, so students must share. Students often have to compromise their artistic vision because of the lack of available materials. I would like them to illustrate a book cover from their favorite book to infuse literacy and twenty-first century skills into the curriculum.

Having a class-set of sharpies will be an invaluable resource to the art classroom.

Without a huge stipend to order materials for the class, I must rely heavily on donations. My students deserve to have a well-rounded art education with many media choices to use. The sharpies will help put some color back into the art classroom!
