My Students

Imagine having something great to write and "snap!", your pencil breaks right in the middle of your great story. Now you have to get up and trade in a pencil for a sharpened one. By the time you get back to your seat you have forgotten what you wanted to write because you didn't have your own.

My students are typical, energetic boys and girls, who live in a low poverty, crime ridden area, which is located in a large city.

Our school is a public school which services children from grades K-8. We are a newly merged elementary, and middle school. So our very young 2nd graders are getting used to being around the bigger middle school kids. They've never had lockers, gym, or music. Many of them qualify for free or reduced breakfast and lunch. During the academic day it's very difficult to engage many of our students in the learning, and the discussions that are going on because it's very hard to keep their attention. Just to keep them focused is a constant challenge for me as a teacher. But I have found that if I show how much I appreciate the classroom, the books, and other materials, the kids will follow my lead. So I intentionally model that behavior.Overall they are great kids who just need the extra support and tools that I alone cannot give them. They love learning!

My Project

When they have the materials that they can call their own, they feel self sufficient and can then proceed to work as the independent workers that we are helping them to become. They love to have their own writing tools. One thing that I dislike as an educator is to run out of things whether it's pencils, erasers, or paper. I can see the difference in the students when there are enough staplers, markers, paper, and pencils. They know the routines, and I can continue to conference one on one with individual students as the rest get what they need. We are planting those seeds as educators, and its the tools that we all provide them with that they will ultimately use to become the best writers, thinkers, and our future doers. Having the the materials on hand also gives the children a sense of pride and dignity in their classroom. They know when they come to school they will have what they need to be successful, to learn, and to get smarter They will look forward to coming every day!

Your donations to this project will assist my students by providing them with writing tools for on going writing. It will broaden their writing experience, and make it more fun and engaging.

We will write personal narratives, list, how to's, poetry, and non-fiction book reports in 2nd grade. I hope to pass on to my students my love and passion for writing. I know that my project will play a vital role not only in this school year, but in the following one as well!
