Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the proud teacher of 19 second grade English Language Learners, ten boys and nine girls. My students are a diverse group representing various Latin American countries such as El Salvador, Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. They come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and live in an underserved community surrounded by poverty and homelessness. This year, these 19 students and I have come together despite the adversity of COVID-19 and created a safe learning environment in a public elementary school classroom in Los Angeles, California.

Each of my students, with their own creativity and unique contributions, brings our classroom alive with learning every day.

They enjoy participating in class discussions where they get to share their life experiences ranging from dreams and aspirations to family struggles. They are great mathematicians and love attending their theater and dance classes. Together, my students, are nineteen enthusiastic and curious minds who demonstrate eagerness to reach their full potential.

My Project

Pencils are an essential tool for second grade students. Freshly sharpened pencils allow students to complete their assignments, provide motivation for writing and promote students' creativity as well as pride for their work. However, a lack of a reliable high-quality pencil sharpener can complicate matters in a classroom.

Students should be able to start their day with all the tools that they need to be successful and productive including a freshly sharpened pencil.

It is very frustrating and time consuming when the only sharpener in the classroom randomly does a good job at sharpening some pencils but not others. My students and I would be grateful to have a high-quality pencil sharpener that actually works!
