My Students

Art education, at one time, was a vital part of student life in the elementary school classroom. Today, sadly, this is not the case. Art education is stripped of funding and the children no longer get to explore their creative side with colored pencils, crayons and paint.

My students are an amazing group of special education students in grades second through fifth that attend an elementary school in a high poverty area.

Not only are they challenged with their environmental risks, but also with their own special needs and challenges.

My Project

My students crave art education in our classroom. Right now we have one set of 12 colored pencils for the class and our pencil sharpener finally gave out over a month ago. During independent work time I find them sketching on scraps on paper. I want to be able to give them a more structured art time with materials that they can actually use. Many of them already exhibit a passion for the arts, but because of testing and the budget crisis, we have not had the time and the resources. This is the time for change. With the addition of colored pencils, unbroken crayons, tempera paint, paper and a pencil sharpener, my students will have the tools to explore the art mediums that I can teach them. I want them to experience the wonder of the (post) impressionists as they paint their own Starry Nights or Scream their way through the Expressionists. I want them to love art as I do.

Art education can be an amazing addition to all aspects of the elementary curriculum.

Not only does visual arts provide students a chance to develop cognitive and creative skills, it also develops imagination. And what kid can't benefit from more imagination!
