My Project

Driving down any Minnesota road you'll have a good chance of seeing a dense green forest on either side of you. To many, this appears to be a thriving ecosystem. But a closer look tells a different story. That greenery is composed of a single species: buckthorn. An escaped historic hedge plant, this small tree, once loosed on the land, will out-compete and smother every other native species, leaving an unhealthy monoculture that does not support wildlife, and that is prone to fungi and disease.

As community and environmental stewards, our students have the knowledge and the passion to help our forest; they only need the right tools.

A big part of our school culture is "place-based learning" - where we use our surroundings to better understand the focus of our academics. This may involve practicing math skills by measuring tree diameters and calculating heights, studying local bird species, or even digging down into the soil to collect samples for analysis. All of these hands-on projects allow our students to take their learning into the real world, and to understand how it applies to their lives and community. For this to be successful, we need a functional ecosystem, one with plant and animal biodiversity, not one that is being choked by one renegade plant. Just like an indoor classroom, our outdoor classrooms need to be looked after.

Using our new tools, we will head out into our school grounds, as well as local parks and nature preserves, and begin to remove buckthorn, one tree at a time, until our green spaces can once again thrive. This project will connect our students to more of our community, and the community will benefit in turn!
