My Students

Dearest Donors, Please help me replicate the PwC Innovation Financial Literacy Challenge first place project winner: Shark Tank!: Entrepreneurship with New-to-Country Students, with my own class of transitional kindergarten students.

I have titled this project "Shark Tank Jr.!" because my students are so very young.

They are just beginning their formal education by attending transitional kindergarten. This is a new grade level for California, and my students are just four years old when they enter my classroom. Our classroom is diverse culturally, linguistically and economically. Some of the students have special learning needs, and some are learning English for the first time. Many of them are newly immigrated to our country, or are first generation Americans whose parents have immigrated. Our school is a Title I school, due to the high number of students living in poverty. I would like for my students to experience a classroom micro-society such as the one described in the PwC Shark Tank Entrepreneurship project. They will earn "money" by completing assignments and homework, and helping to keep the room tidy and beautiful. They will learn that with hard work, one can earn rewards.

My Project

Once the students have had the chance to accumulate a little savings, they will have the opportunity to work to create class businesses. Since my students are so young, we will work together as a whole group to brainstorm businesses for our classroom. This will lead to vocabulary developing opportunities such as partner conversations and shared writing experiences. Food items such as Goldfish crackers and lemonade, cleaning items, and art supplies such as washable markers, henna markers, sketch pads and oil pastels will be used in various ways. With these items, student businesses can include cleaning services and selling artworks and snacks. We already have a class cash register, and that, along with the iPad, will be used for transactions, budgets, and keeping track of student savings. The Money Activity Station will provide a fun way for students to learn computation and develop basic counting skills.

Should this project be funded, my students will begin to learn how our financial system works.

They will develop math and writing skills, and increase vocabulary. They will discover how groups of people can work together to create an economic system that depends on everyone doing their part. They will also learn how hard work and saving can lead to future rewards. Your donation can make a difference in these students' lives by helping them develop financial literacy.
