Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

“A Long Walk to Water: Based on a True Story” is a book that will teach my students the importance of having clean water. I want my students to learn that there is a water crisis in other parts of the world. My students will read this book and understand that compassion impacts the people in our community and globally too. Having clean water is a human right.

I want my students to be introspective and reflect about the importance of being compassionate toward others.

The materials in this project include the book, "A Long Walk to Water," water, chairs, Warm Pals stuffed animals, a blanket, post it notes, journals and a visual timer. Students will use the visual timer to know when its someone else's turn to read.

My student will sit in a chair, get a blanket, and a Warm Pal. Holding a Warm Pal, blanket and sitting in the chair will help my students feel comfortable reading. The student will also get a bottle of water. Being comforted by warm things and drinking water will allow my students the chance to have a class discussion about compassion. In our classroom community, we have warm things and ready access to drinking water, but there are people around the world that don't have their basic needs met.

Students will write in their journals about the ways reading this book helped them understand the way other people feel when they lack basic things and how they can help others.

Once my students learn about the water crisis, they will define the word compassion on post-it notes. Compassion is having concern for other people's suffering. Students will write journal entries using the perspective of the characters in the book. Thank you for supporting my student's interest in learning about compassion.
