My Students

We all must tell our story. Being a good storyteller is a effective way to interact with others. Our school's theme this year is "tell us your story." I believe we all have stories to tell, but some children need help in being able to tell that story.

I have several students that are gifted and others who have special needs.

A small group of my students are second language learners. In my school there are immigrants from Asia, Central and South America, the Middle East, and Africa. My school is also a center for gifted and talented students.

My Project

Sometimes we need an escape. Sometimes we need to tell a story. Role playing games have provided a way to do both. Through shared storytelling a small group of students will be able to express themselves and create a world and characters of their own making.

Dungeons & Dragons is the granddaddy of all role playing games (RPGs).

It allows students to be creative. They help direct the story and create their own characters as avatars of themselves. It encourages teamwork. Rarely can an adventurer solve a problem on their own; they must rely on their friends. It encourages math. At their core, role playing game mechanics involve the chance and calculations of rolling multi-sided dice. I feel role playing games have a lot to offer across content areas.

Luminaries such as Mike Meyers or Stephen Colbert attribute part of their success and creativity to their experiences playing Dungeon's and Dragons. I agree wholeheartedly. I feel role playing games have made me more creative and a better story teller as an adult. I want to share that experience with my students.
