First grade is such a huge year for learning. They come in as little kindergarteners and leave as big second graders. The amount they learn in first grade can arguably be the most a student learns in one year in their entire educational career. They learn how to read, write, add, subtract, and how to be in charge of their learning.
I teach in a low-income public school and am a dual language teacher.
I have two classes of students that come to me to learn math and literacy in English. My partner teaches literacy, science and social studies in Spanish. Because I am in a low-income school, many of my students come to school without adequate knowledge and experiences. They have a lot of catching up to do compared to a typical student. My goal is to do everything I can to decrease that gap and instill in them a love of learning.
My Project
Shared reading is a strategy that helps my most striving first graders who are just learning to read. It is a technique where we read a book together over multiple days practicing reading skills, vocabulary, and sight words.
Shared reading helps our most striving learners feel like readers.
With teacher and text support, students will be able to independently read books above their level and feel like readers. They will be able to read these over and over and practice their reading each time they read.
These high-interest and engaging books will be perfect for teaching important sight words, practicing simple phonics skills, and engaging in simple word solving strategies.
