My Students

Within a typical class I will have highly gifted students, students with special needs, and also English learners. As with many 9th graders, high school is a difficult transition and I find that many of my students are reluctant to get help and often will fall behind because they struggle to get the assistance that they need. Some of these students will make time for after school tutorials or come in during nutrition or lunch but many have to take a bus and do not have time to review. When these students go home they do not always have the support or guidance to help them address their difficulties with classroom content and subsequently they find themselves following further behind.

My Project

In classrooms, teachers allocate bulletin board space for exemplars (student work that demonstrates mastery of the standards). Often this space is only appreciated by administrators or department chairs and very few students have the time to observe the work or garner any insight into its power. By using a webcam I can highlight student work and walk the students virtually through the nuances of why it is effective. This will provide my students with effective exemplars that they can watch at their own pace with video and audio support. My school will often direct students toward Kahn academy and while that is a useful tool (especially for Math) it often does not correlate with what I'm asking of my students. With 2 webcams I can utilize one for videoing direct teaching models from my laptop and the other I can use at the desktop workstation for student directed modeling. The video lessons my students and I create can be uploaded onto our school website and unlike the student bulletin work (that has a short shelf life) they can remain there for both current and future students.
