My Students

My 4th graders read daily but I've noticed that many of the novels available in our school are not books that will keep my students interested in reading. The books are old and worn. I try to find high interest books that will capture the imagination my students and have them ASKING to read!

I have a group of 4th graders that are thirsty for good books.

I have bought class sets of a few titles and have them looking forward to the next books! I have mats, rugs and bean bags that they use to find a place to curl up and read. I can't explain the feeling I get, as a teacher, when a 4th grader, especially a boy, walks in the classroom and the first thing he says is, "'Ms. Johnson, I REALLY want to read the next chapter!" or, when the girls ask, "Ms. Johnson, can I stay in at recess to read?". "Rooftoppers" is a book about the rooftop "society" in London similar to the chimney sweeps in Mary Poppins. Students will become absorbed in the story. "Dorko the Magnificent" is a little easier read but just as captivating for kids. The girls will be hooked on the adventures in "Ms.Rapscott's Girls." I want my kids to love reading! I have gotten emails from parents asking me to tell their child that it's OK to break for dinner and go back to their book. I want to keep that enthusiasm going!

My Project

Reading is the foundation for life. If students, especially boys, don't develop a love of reading and build their comprehension skills by middle school, they may avoid reading throughout middle school and high school thus not reaching their full potential. I see students each year who have already given up. I try to ignite that spark but they move on to middle school and tell me they "hate" reading. It breaks my heart when I think of how excited they were just a few years earlier and now say they "hate" it. My students need books that will grab their attention and keep them reading.

If our children are going to be lifelong learners, they must be lifelong readers.

At this age, 9-11, it is imperative to help our kids discover the love of reading. If we can get our kids to ENJOY reading and hone their comprehension skills, they will be more inclined to pick up informational texts and have the strategical tools to comprehend what they are reading.
