Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students want to explore the world even when they cannot leave the classroom. With the power of the Internet, my students can explore a wealth of knowledge, culture, and information from right in the classroom. With programs such as Skype, my students can chat with students from around the world.

My students are from the Bronx.

All students in our school receive free breakfast and lunch due to economic struggles. Due to budget shortfalls, we do not have textbooks for every students. Instead, we are provided with a class set that all students in a particular grade level share. Even given these circumstances, our students come to school everyday with positive attitudes and an eagerness to learn something new. My students crave to know about the greater world and cultures that exist in it.

My Project

My students need 3 Chromebooks for word processing and Internet searching. Though an increasing number of my students are coming to school with mobile devices, such as smartphones, there are still several students who lack access to the resources available on the Internet. I plan on using the laptops to allow students to explore topics in small groups on their own. Research finds that self-directed learning is much more powerful than a teacher simply giving ("lecturing") students the necessary information. I am a true believer that mobile technology is the new frontier and I want my students to be well-prepared for this upcoming shift in how we all receive and share information. My students will learn how to look up evidence to support their arguments, use mobile apps to practice and reinforce skills we have learned, and finding appropriate e-books that match their reading levels. Your donation will help me close the gap between my students and the rest of the world.

Your donations will literally open up a world of information to my students.

Instead of just reading about the lives of students living in Israel or China, my students will be able to chat with and even work on assignments with students from all over the world in real time. We do not have class sets of encyclopedias, but with your donations, my students will be able to access not only multiple encyclopedias, but also primary sources, videos, and pictures to help supplement their learning.
