My Project

As elementary students, getting them working with their hands is essential for learning. It meshes learning with play and exploration. I am an elementary art teacher at two different title 1 schools in North Charleston, South Carolina looking to build the creative fire in students that can help them learn to think creatively, and use their creativity for self expression. I am looking to do this by trying to get them using as many different materials as possible.

When most students come to art class they expect to get pencils, paper, colored pencils, and crayons.

They expect to draw and color and occasionally get to use scissors and glue, but I want to change that. One way I want to do this is by letting them get messy. I want to get them using clay! I want to allow them to build, shape, mold, create, and paint three dimensional works of art! I want to get them excited about learning different styles of art! I can do this by doing a series of clay projects where they can explore materials and how they work with clay.

We can use the mats to create a secure workspace for them to create. We can use rollers both regular and ones with designs to discover how we can roll out slabs. We can use stamps to press designs into clay, and we can use glazes to add painted details. Getting these supplies would allow my students to really utilize every style of making art all in one fun series of projects.
