Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Children are in many ways excellent candidates to practice yoga. Research has shown that yoga can help kids to nurture a strong, healthy body; a calm, concentrated mind and, with commitment, a sense of inner peace. I believe children are natural yogis because they have so much natural energy, flexibility, and creativity. Kids really love the breathing exercises and even chanting! This summer I had the great opportunity to travel to India where I studied at the ASHTANGA YOGA RESEARCH INSTITUTE in Mysore with Pattabhi Jois and his daughter Saraswati. My experiences in that country have had an immense impact on my physical and mental health, and as soon as I got back home I felt I have to share this knowledge not only with my second grade classroom students but with any chid that is interested in developing a more harmonious balance between body and mind. I presented the project to the school's Principal and fortunately, Shanti Yoga for Children got a great deal of support and was approved. The project will be implemented during the after-school program at P.S. 18 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This class will encourage a deeper sense of body awareness, self-exploration and interpersonal skills. Alive with flowing sequences, balancing poses, breathing exercises, and creative relaxation techniques, children are sure to relish in their selves. As well, partner poses and cooperative yoga games inspire positive peer interactions that they are sure to carry into their everyday lives. However, the project cannot be completed unless we get support in the provision of supplies such as Yoga mats. With your donations you will be helping young people with their health, well-being and confidence.
