This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Think back to high school English, do you recall how difficult it was to struggle with comprehending Shakespeare, no matter how interesting the story seemed to be? Teachers often aspire to help students understand and actually enjoy Shakespeare's works, as the language is a great challenge for many young readers.

My students attend an urban school that is a Title I school with a high percentage of children from low-income families; thus, in my general education English I class, they are of varied abilities and home lives learning together in one classroom.

As an educator my goals are to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic standards and implement differentiated instruction to meet the needs of each learner. Many of my students are unable to receive help at home with their home learning and some of them are also SPED students or reading below grade level. My students have an appetite for knowledge but many need additional resources that include books that help with comprehension.

My Project

Romeo and Juliet in graphic form allows students to be challenged by analysis of literature and not just understanding each word or phrase one at a time. Shakespeare's masterpieces are packed with immortal and lasting themes that have endured for ages. Students will be able to relate to and understand a complex piece of complex literature. From the highest performers to the struggling readers.

The eternal themes of Shakespeare are literally the fabric of our lives: exploring the effects love and hate, contextualizing fate and free will, and dealing with life and death analysis of these themes will lead to enjoyment and discovery; additionally, the graphic novels are integral to increasing comprehension and will have a lasting impact.
