Help Ms. Sweeney

I teach 12th grade English in a large, over-crowded school in Los Angeles. We are both a Title 1 school and a PI4 school. In the coming year I will be teaching an elective dealing with the plays of William Shakespeare. Because Shakespeare's plays were originally written to be performed, it is very important to be able to show my students the various interpretations of the plays as they unfold on film. Unfortunately, our library does not stock films and I do not have access to many of the works in the local video store. To that end, I am requesting a small library of dvd's based on the works of Shakespeare that I will be teaching in the new course. Being able to view several different versions of a particular scene enables the student to see that literature can have different interpretations. Not only does the visual impact stregthen their understanding of the plays but enables them to become more proficient at reading the plays when they have heard a professional actor "speak the speech." Seeing the scenes in performance also leads to discussions of how themes, metaphors and allusions are incorporated into each film and how music, staging and lighting, etc. informs the meaning of the piece. Shakespeare is not easy for my students, many of whom speak English as a second language, but when they "get it" they are so empowered and this empowerment makes them better students in general. It gives them the confidence that they can understand and process difficult material. To help them with this process, I am respectfully asking for your help in providing the enrichment that the films will provide.
