My Project
This project will provide all of the high school band students with enough materials to create their own shekere instrument. Our school population is 100% refugees. Students come from Afghanistan, Syria, Mexico, El Salvador, Uganda, Kenya, and many other African countries.
Students will be able to create and personalize their own African shekeres using plaster, acrylic paint, and decorative beads.
The shekeres are made by filling the balloons with beads, blowing them up, and covering them with plaster strips. Students will be painting them with the help of our art teacher. Then beads are strung on wire and attached around the painted plaster. Once the inner balloon is popped, the beads inside and the beads outside create a perfect shekere.
I invision students using paint colors and bead patterns that represent themselves. They may use the colors of the flag from their home country or their grandmothers favorite color. They can use the letter beads to place their name and write sentences in their language which will be permanently added to the shekere. This is also a good social emotional activity. Stringing the beads is a repetitive and time-consuming task. That would allow for lots of conversation and bonding between students as they adjust to this new country.
