My Students

I work in a public elementary school, in an area plagued with high poverty and unemployment, North of Houston. My students, coming from a school district that was shut down by the state for the unjust education, have faced many obstacles the average 50 year old has never faced. They come to school to learn, despite the lack of stability at home. They are eager mathematicians and soaring scientists. They come from immigrant homes, 100% high risk, where the parents often works two jobs just to make sure that the children have the basic needs for school. My students have a desire to learn and grow. They want to be good role models for their younger siblings. They work hard each day, and they come to school with a positive attitude. I want to make sure that my students have the same opportunities to learn as their peers, who are not facing the same obstacles. In August, our community was hit with a tragic natural disaster, Hurricane Harvey, and it has been exceptionally hard on our students and their families to get back on their feet.

My Project

My students strive to be the best students they can be. I encourage them every day to support each other and show sympathy. We have learned that they all come from homes of hard-working parents, yet they do not earn enough money for some life essentials. To support my students' thirst for environmental science knowledge I need a chicken coop to house the fertilized eggs we are raising. A compost to house the worms and beetles we are raising to help decompose our biodegradable waste. Gardening tools to help kick start our sustainable garden since our school is in a fresh veggie and fruit desert.

This school year has been extremely hard for several of my students due to the impact of Hurricane Harvey, however, they still work very hard every day to obtain academic achievements.

Having taught elementary students in the past, it was a challenge trying to bring that out of them because of the experiences they previously had in math and science classes. I believe that with access to these materials, I will send my students into the future, with a continued interested in these highly critical fields.
