My Students

"In the world, there's light and dark, and everything in between." This is the last sentence of a book entitled "Shades Of People". I read it to my kindergarten class every year to share the beauty of "human" color and to celebrate our own uniqueness, our similarities and our differences.

In a very large public school district, I teach at a Title I elementary school of about 1000 students who come from different socioeconomic & culturally diverse backgrounds.

My 25 kindergarten students come to school everyday with an "I can!" attitude. They are hardworking, energetic 5 year old children who are excited to "show what they know!". They speak English, Spanish, Portuguese, Hebrew, Armenian, Farsi and most come from immigrant families. With a varied level of abilities, special needs, and foundations in art skills, one thing that my students all have in common is their ability to view the world with an open mind and an open heart. My students thrive in social settings where they are able to interact with their peers. They find similarities & differences among themselves and their families & together we celebrate the uniqueness of all. They typically do not see things as simply "black" or "white". They notice and make keen observations of the shades of color in their world.

My Project

My students need skin color crayons, paints and colored pencils in order to reflect their understanding of our multicultural world in their creative art work. My students love to draw pictures of themselves, their friends and their families. They try their best to capture the physical characteristics that they see such as gender, hair, eye color, height and size. They freely create portraits of people using their own abilities and perceptions but their creations have been limited by the lack of complete resources in the classroom. Specifically, students are given the usual "rainbow" of crayon colors and paints but they aren't provided with the unique rainbow of "human colors" (i.e. skin color). By providing my kids with the resources to accurately depict their own observations of people, they are able to understand the meaning of a multicultural and multiracial world. The use of these artistic tools provides a good introduction to racial and ethnic diversity that can be found in familiar settings to my students such as within our own classroom, school, local parks or beaches, and of course in the broader picture of our "world".

Donations to this project will allow my students to draw what they see and to reflect upon it.

My students take notice of physical traits such as "skin color" but they learn to look beyond the obvious. They might see creamy, ivory, coffee, cocoa, copper and tan or perhaps light and dark and everything in between. But these are just "book covers" or "wrapping paper" of what is inside...the human soul. My hope is for my students to look beyond the external and to focus on the internal.
