This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students in the EMPOWER program are creative, resourceful, and eager to develop skills that will help them live independently and thrive in the future. Many of them face unique challenges leading to school resistance, but they rise to the occasion with enthusiasm and determination. This project will allow us to integrate sewing into our curriculum, providing a hands-on learning experience that is both practical and empowering.

Sewing machines will teach my students essential life skills, such as mending clothes, creating simple garments, and exploring creative projects.

With these machines, students will learn to sew, fostering their independence and problem-solving abilities. Sewing is not only a practical skill but also an opportunity for students to express themselves creatively and learn how to feel confidence in who they are.

By learning how to repair and create clothing, students will save money and reduce waste, supporting sustainable living practices. Additionally, these skills could open up vocational opportunities, as students gain experience with craftsmanship and design. The sewing machines will also serve as tools for building patience, focus, and fine motor skills—critical areas of development for my students.
